First of all, you’d better think about the following three questions before buying tea:

  1. How much do you know about the tea you want to buy before you buy it?
  2. Do you know how to brew the tea you bought?
  3. Do you always want to spend a small amount of money to buy tea with excellent taste?

Here we will share some tips about buying tea for your reference.

1. Is it good for the dried tea leaf?

It feels a little hurt when holding the tea slightly in hand, and the tea leaf will be broken when crushing it slightly with thumb and forefinger indicates that the tea is well dried and the water content of the tea is less than 5%. If the tea leaf is not broken when crushing hard, it indicates that the tea has been moistened and softened, and the quality of the tea will be affected.

2. The uniformity of the tea leaf

Tea leaves with uniform shape and color are better. Tea stalks, reeds, corners, tea powder and high proportion of impurities will mostly affect the quality of tea soup. The less, the better.

3. Appearance and color of tea leaf

All kinds of tea products have their standard color. Generally, it is preferable to have glossy and precious color or some green tea, and the frog skin color with gray and white dots is the most valuable color for tea production. The shape of tea strips varies with the type of tea. Longjing is sword-like, Wenshan is strip-shaped, frozen top tea is hemispherical, Tie Guanyin tea is spherical, Baihao Oolong is naturally curled with five colors (white, green, yellow, red, black), fragrant slices and black tea are thin or fragmentary.

4. Smell the aroma of tea leaf

This is one of the main factors that determine the quality of tea. Because of the different methods and degree of fermentation, the aroma of dried tea is different. Green tea takes its fragrance, and it has flower fragrance. Oolong tea has its own ripe fruit fragrance, black tea has a caramel fragrance, and flower tea should be mixed with smoked flower fragrance and tea fragrance. The strong aroma of tea soup is pure and rich. In addition, tea is inferior if it has oil odor, scorch odor, cyanine odor, obsolete odor, fire odor, stuffy odor or other peculiar odor.

5. Taste tea

Because of the different types of tea, its taste is also different, some must be delicate and mellow, some must be stimulated at the entrance and slightly bitter, some are focused on sweet and moist and have aftertaste. In short, the good tea is less bitter, with sweet and smooth mellow taste, and can make the mouth have enough aroma or throat rhyme. If bitter and astringent, old or hot, it is not a good tea product.

6. View the color of tea soup

Tea has different water color because of its heavy fermentation. Generally, green tea is honey green, black tea is bright red, white oolong is amber, frozen oolong is golden, and covered tea is honey yellow. Apart from its standard water color, tea soup should be clear and bright with oil, and no turbidity or sediment can be produced.

7. Look at the quality of the tea leaves (tea residue after brewing)

Most of the tea leaves which are brewed quickly after the degree of leaf unfolding are crude and old. The strips are not tight, the water is very thin, and the tea soup is dull and tasteless. Tea is made of tender fresh leaves and has good manufacturing technology, rich tea soup and many times of brewing. If the tea leaves are not developed on the leaf surface or are still only developed to a small extent after repeated brewing, either the failure of fire cultivation or the stale tea that has been placed for a period of time will result. However, Baihao Oolong or Longjing teas are mainly tea buds, which are easily unfolded after soaking due to slight twisting.
